Johnson Nursery is driven by passion, enthusiasm, and hard work—but above all, we are a family.
With the dedication of our outstanding team of over 100 employees, we cultivate more than 2,000 varieties of annuals, perennials, ornamental shrubs, grasses, vines, and tropical plants.
For over 40 years, we have focused on delivering top-quality plants and exceptional service to wholesale nurseries, independent garden centers, mom-and-pop stores, arboretums, botanical gardens, and both commercial and residential landscapers.
How We Help You
Propagation
Did you know that many of the plants we offer are propagated in-house? While we don’t propagate every variety, we do grow a large selection ourselves. We start by taking cuttings from the “Mother Plant” and apply a unique blend of fertilizer, water, sunlight, and patience to produce liners. These liners are subsequently transplanted into their final containers, to be ready for purchase.

Meet the Johnson Family
David Johnson, founder and President of Johnson Nursery, dreamed of running a wholesale nursery on his family farm in Willard, NC. After graduating from Duke University, he pursued this dream by working at Fairview Nursery in Wilson, NC. A year and a half later, he attended NC State, studying Horticultural Science and nursery management under the renowned J.C. Raulston, further fueling his passion. In 1981, David founded Johnson Nursery—a lifelong passion he continues to nurture today.
The nursery started small and grew steadily. In 1987, David’s wife, Jill, became a key part of its success, initially as David’s strongest supporter before officially joining the business later. Together, they expanded the nursery while raising their children, Chason (born in 1991) and Annie (born in 1996).
Chason Johnson graduated from NC State in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business Management, minoring in Horticulture and Economics. He joined the nursery that September and has since become a vital part of its operations as Vice President, focusing on Sales and Marketing while continuing to support his father’s vision.
